Compulsive Overeating

Compulsive overeating is often one of the not-so-talked about types of eating disorders and is often considered to be an illness especially if it causes your body weight to reach unhealthy proportions. Compulsive overeating causes increased weight as well as other side effects like heart problems.


Fortunately because many Americans suffer from problems with compulsive overeating, there is a lot of help to be found to help control this unhealthy lifestyle. Many people can engage in compulsive overeating, but won't see any physical signs especially if they are young. They might have a fast metabolism and it is difficult for them to gain weight on a normal basis. However, if they are eating mostly greasy, fried and other types of fat and sugar heavy foods, then they are likely to have internal problems that may not arise physically until they are older. However, eating greasy foods while compulsive overeating can cause heart and artery problems. That is why even if you aren't seeing actual weight gain because of compulsive overeating, it is still a problem that needs to be addressed. However, many people that continue this lifestyle of compulsive overeating will gain weight, and that can lead to serious health risks. 

Why People Overeat:

There are many unhealthy habits that serve as a vice for many including smoking, drinking and for many it is overeating. Many rely on foods to make them feel happier, to cope with stress or depression. However, just like with most situations, too much of anything can be a bad thing. Overeating to the point of gaining too much weight and encountering health problems is when a person should know that overeating is becoming a problem. 

Signs of Compulsive Overeating:

One of the biggest indicators that someone is struggling with compulsive overeating is that food becomes habit forming. Because the brain releases dopamine when we eat certain types of foods (especially those high in sugar and fat) the person is then motivated to eat more of that type of food. However, just like with drugs, the endorphins begin requiring a higher amount of sugar and fat, and more of it in order to activate in the brain. That is why people begin eating more and more to achieve that rush. Many researchers believe this reasoning is why so many Americans are obese. If you are someone that is quickly seeing the number rise on the scale because of an inability to control how much you are eating, you might be  heading toward some serious health issues including heart disease and high cholesterol. Other symptoms of compulsive eating includes loss of energy, headaches and nausea. Your bowel movements might also see more constipation or diarrhea because of a lack of certain nutrients in your diet. If you are seeing these symptoms on a regular basis, it could be a result of your compulsive overeating diet. 

How to Stop Compulsive Overeating:

To prevent further weight gain and to promote weight loss and a healthier life style, it is important to take healthier measures to ensure you can start cutting back on how much you are eating. For some, it may require enrolling in a healthy eating program like Weight Watchers. These kinds of programs help members understand portion control and helps them develop healthy eating habits. It also helps to curb over eating for those who engage in regular exercise. Getting at least 20 to 30 minutes each day of rigorous exercise can help shed those pounds as well as encourage a person to eat healthier. 

For most people that struggle with compulsive overeating, it is important to set rules. Set an eating schedule so you can structure how, when and how much you eat is one of the best ways to avoid snacking when you shouldn't or eating too much food at a given time. Learn to enjoy the foods you can enjoy. Replace those cookies for strawberries. Instead of eating a bag of chips, eat a small bowl of baby carrots. It can be difficult to make the transition at first, but it  is important to choose healthy foods that you like. Don't try and force yourself to eat a food just because it is healthy. There are plenty of healthy foods that you can try to decide if you like them or not. These are all great ways to help prevent compulsive overeating from taking over your life.
